COURSE DESCRIPTION: Personnel from the various protective services like private security, police, fire, prison, school safety, etc. will need to deal with violent and disruptive offenders – be they criminals, errant members of public, disruptive and violent school children and parents, prisoners, mentally-challenged persons, etc. – that is, to restrain them.

This course trains relevant personnel on the various approaches to restrain such persons. The use of restraint equipment is a key component also covered. Some issues to be dealt with are:

  • Restraint policy of the American Correctional Association (ACA)
  • The United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for Treatment of Prisoners
  • Listing of approved restraints
  • When to use restraints
  • Prohibited practices
  • Application of handcuffs, handcuffs and martin chain, handcuffs with restraint cover, leg irons, key-cuff plastic restraint, disposable plastic double cuff
  • Removal of restraints
  • Inspection of restraints etc.
